My name is Heather Schmitt. I am proud to be the current Pre K/Kindergarten teacher in the Family Ministries program at St. Mark's. This is my second year teaching this program. Before I became a 'stay at home mom', I assisted in preschool and Special Ed classes and my husband, Harry, and I devote much of our Spring to coaching sports for athletes with special needs. I have a special place in my heart for this age group of young children. I especially enjoy exploring and learning alongside of them, as they continue to help me see things through their eager eyes.
My own children, Andrea (6 yrs.) and Alex (3 yrs.) have gained so much from their experience in St. Mark's Family Ministry Programs. The stories they hear and songs they sing are reflecting in their everyday life and character. I am excited to help make it fun and comfortable for children to learn about God and to help them look forward to coming to church each Sunday. The Pre K/Kindergarten class uses the Spark Curriculum. Each week we do worship with the 1st and 2nd grade class. This worship includes songs, prayers (including the Lord's Prayer), silent time for reflection, and experiences that mirror those of a typical church service, including offering and candle lighting. Weekly, we discuss terms that the children may hear during a church service as well. Following worship, the pre k/k students go to their classroom for a story from the Spark storybook Bible. Discussions involve helping the children connect these stories to their daily lives and focus on how these stories/lessons can reflect in their everyday experiences. The stories and discussions are followed by a guided lesson using age appropriate activities that include stickers and some writing/pre-writing skills. When time allows, an art project that relates to focus is also provided. Songs and prayers are incorporated throughout the lesson.
