Listening for God’s Voice in Scripture

Dwelling in the Word

This is the day that the Lord has made let us rejoice and be glad in it!

There is an ancient practice for reading Scripture that has been revitalized recently as the practice of Dwelling in the Word (Lutheran Theological Seminary).  Dwelling in the word can be done alone or with another person or in a small group.  We use this at our Thursday noon prayers.

The process is as follows:

  • Say a brief prayer.  “God, our Father, please be with me as I read this scripture.”  Or any simple prayer of your own words.
  • Read a passage of scripture, preferably out loud.
  • Take a moment of silence.
  • Read the passage a second time, again out loud by a different person if possible.
  • Take of moment of silence.
    • What word, phrase, idea, image captures my attention?  Why?
    • What questions has this passage raised?
    • What might God be saying to me in this passage?
    • Ask these questions.  Take time with each.
    • What might God be saying about the current situation for my family, church, Upper Perkiomen Valley or the world
  • Close with the Lord’s Prayer.
  • This is a great practice with 2 or more people because you can discuss your thoughts.

Psalm 121

I lift up my eyes to the hills—
    from where will my help come?

My help comes from the Lord,
    who made heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot be moved;
    he who keeps you will not slumber.

He who keeps Israel
    will neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord is your keeper;
    the Lord is your shade at your right hand.

The sun shall not strike you by day,
    nor the moon by night.

The Lord will keep you from all evil;
    he will keep your life.

The Lord will keep
    your going out and your coming in
    from this time on and forevermore.

Blessing

Almighty God, give us wisdom to perceive you, intelligence to understand you, diligence to seek you, patience to wait for you, vision to behold you, a heart to meditate upon you, a life to proclaim you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives with you and the Holy Spirit, one God now and forever.  Amen.
